Minneriya national park is situated in north central province, near to Polonnaruwa main city. It is 182 km away from Colombo. The park is consisting with intermediate forest, bamboo stands, grass and giant trees. Nowhere else does it seem that such diversity is represented within a single protected area; particularly in such an intact state?
The Minneriya tank made in 3rd century AD support a variety of water fowls while being of immense socio- economic value. The park covers an area of 8889 hectares. The park receive an annual rain fall about 1145mm. Annual temperature around 27 -30Co. The park is consisting of tropical dry mixed evergreen forest predominates characterized by high stature.
24 species of mammals have been reported from this park, but the park is popular for the wild elephant mainly. From March to August the park is a paradise for the big elephant herds and gathering. They come to eat the young grasses and enjoy the water from the tank. 100 – 300 elephants are there in herds depending with the time. Other than the elephants, spotted deers, barking deers, jackals, monkeys and many species of birds and water fowls too can be seen in the park.
