Moonstone (semi circular entrance step with symbolic carvings) is a decorative semi-circle granite carving in a traditional entrance of an ancient Buddhist sacred or semi-sacred place. The most exquisite moonstone discovered from Abhayagiriya monastery in Anuradhapura. It has been decorated with bands of four animals, flower motifs, creepers, swans and the lotus flower. Various scholars have expressed many views about the figures appearing on the moonstone. Some try to match that with the philosophy of the Buddha.
