Kandy is a city of replete with scenic beauty, salubrious climate, naturally protected with mountain ranges and a river, situated 116kms away from Colombo. The city is been decorated with an artificial lake made by the last king in Kandy. The focal point of the Kandy city is the temple of the Tooth Relic of Buddha which consider as the most sacred shrine for the Buddhists in the country. Considering the value the tooth relic temple and the colonial building remaining around the city, it has been nominated as a world heritage site by the UNESCO.
The Tooth Relic was given the royal patronage by the local kings from the day it was brought to Sri Lanka from India in 4th century AD. Since the last capital of the country was Kandy, There are many remaining relating to the Tooth Relic in the area in social, cultural, architectural, art and crafts are special among them. The Kandy esala pageant (a parade with decorative elephants and traditional dances in Sri Lanka) is a popular event that organizes to honor to the Tooth Relic annually in the month of august for 10 days.
Peradeniya Botanical garden is another interesting attraction which comes from colonial period. It is just outside the city having 5000 varieties of tropical plants. Gadaladeniya, Embakka and Lankathilaka temples also popular places made during Kandian period.
