Yala national park is the most popular park among the visitors for its variety of wildlife. The main characteristic of the park is tropical thorn forest. And also the park is associated with coastline and coral reefs. The park situated 393 km away from Colombo via Galle and Matara. It is in the south eastern region of the country. Yala Park is the 2nd largest park in the country. Total area of the park is about 97881 hectares. It is divided into 5 blocks and only one block (No.01) is open for the public.
There are 32 species of mammals identified in the park. Elephants, sloth bear, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, wild buffaloes and crocodiles are common in the park. It is about 120 species of birds including raptors like crested serpent eagle, white bellied sea eagle and many eagles, owls also can be seen. Water birds are attracted to the lagoons and lakes including pelican, Painted stork, Black necked storks and many waders. During north east monsoon (from December to March) the lagoons are visited by thousands of migrating water fowls including pintail, gargany, white winged black tern and Eurasian curlew. Especially The Park is popular for the leopard because of the high density of them comparing to the other parks.
